Modification of the Surface Properties of Polyimide Films using POSS Deposition and Oxygen Plasma Exposure

چکیده
Topographically rich surfaces were generated by spray-coating organic solutions of a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, octakis(dimethylsilyloxy)silsesquioxane (POSS), on Kapton® HN films and exposing them to radio frequency generated oxygen plasma. Changes in both surface chemistry and topography were observed. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy indicated substantial modification of the POSS-coated polyimide surface topographies as a result of oxygen plasma exposure. Water contact angles varied from 104° for unexposed POSS-coated surfaces to ~5° for samples exposed

Effect of Using Cold Plasma Treatment on the Surface and Physicochemical Properties of Starch-chitosan Composite Film
Background and Objectives: Cold plasma is an eco-friendly and non-thermal technique, which has become an important technology to change the physical and chemical features of polymers. Recently, cold plasma has been considered in the decontamination and modification of packaging materials in the food industry. Therefore, the objective of this study was to survey the effect of using low-pressure ...
متن کاملErosion of POSS-polyimide films under hypervelocity impact and atomic oxygen: The role of mechanical properties at elevated temperatures
Low Earth orbital debris impacts on the external surfaces of satellites have increased dramatically in recent years. Polyimides are used as the outer layer of thermal control insulation blankets, covering most of the external spacecraft surfaces that are exposed to the space environment. A recently developed material, named polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-polyimide, shows significan...
متن کاملPOSS-Polyimide Nanocomposite Films: Simulated Hypervelocity Space Debris and Atomic Oxygen Effects
The combined effect of hypervelocity space debris impact and atomic oxygen (AO) attack on the degradation of reinforced polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)-polyimide films was studied. A laser-driven flyer (LDF) system was used to accelerate aluminum flyers to impact velocities of up to 3 km s 1. The impacted films were exposed to an RF-plasma source, which was used to simulate the eff...
متن کاملComparisons of Polyhedral Oligomericsilsesquioxane (POSS) Polyimides
Polyimides (PIs) such as Kapton are used extensively in spacecraft thermal blankets, solar arrays, and space inflatable structures. Atomic oxygen (AO) in low Earth orbit (LEO) causes severe degradation of Kapton. SiO2 coatings impart remarkable oxidation resistance and have been widely used to protect Kapton, yet imperfections in the SiO2 application process and micrometeoroid/debris impact in ...
متن کاملSurface Modification of Silicone Rubber Membrane by Microwave Discharge to Improve Biocompatibility
Wetability of biocompatible polymers can be improved by plasma surface modification. The purpose of this study was to surface modify an experimental poly (dimethylsiloxane) rubber (PDMS) material in order to improve its wetability and biocompatibility. Surface properties of the PDMS were characterized using contact angles measurement for wetability analysis. Samples of experimental silico...
